EMPOWERED ARAB SISTER OF THE YEAR

Epsilon Alpha Sigma is proud to recognize Amanda Awil as our 2018 Empowered Arab Sister of the year, for her passion for philanthropy and strong community involvement, both within ΕΑΣ and beyond. As a Founding Sister and current Vice President of the Epsilon Chapter, Awil has successfully collaborated in establishing ΕΑΣ at the University of California, Riverside. During their inaugural year, the chapter received numerous awards from both CMC (Collaborative Multicultural Council) for Chapter of the Year and MESC (Middle Eastern Student Center) for Collaborative Program of the Year. Amanda has also served as the finance director and worked alongside the Director of Recruitment to serve as Co-Pledge educator.
Beyond ΕΑΣ, Awil has been involved in numerous clubs and extracurricular activities. During her second year of college, she joined KID (Kindling Intellectual Development), where she served as a mentor for children within the underserved community of Riverside. Through the program, she held weekly academia and craft lessons. Furthermore, she participated in their KID iDiscovery Camp. As a camp counselor, she worked to ignite the youth’s passion for learning and helped many step out of their comfort zone through team building activities and communication exercises. Apart from KID, Awil has been a member of Flying Samaritans providing healthcare services at no charge to the underserved patient population in Baja California, Mexico. Through this organization, she is able to shadow physicians and provide non emergency services such as family medicine, optometry, audiology, dentistry and preventative health care. To further expand her experiences and knowledge with the underserved community of Riverside, she works alongside Dr. Andrew Subica at the University of California, Riverside. Within his lab, she collaborates to conduct community-based research on social medicine and population health within the patient population served by the university's medical school. Awil has also volunteered at the Riverside Community Hospital as a Health Scholar. As a Health Scholar, she took initiative to improve patient experience through improving quality of care. Last winter, she also helped create the first Syrian American Association of Science and Health, where she now serves as a board member. Their mission is to promote the advancement of Syrian Americans in science and healthcare through mentorship, scholarship, community service and research. Furthermore, along with being part of several organizations she worked as a CNAS Scholar Reader where she collaborated with three academic advisors and served as a primary grader for six cohorts. Through this experience, she gained greater insight into academia. Lastly, after completing 334 hours of the Cope Health Scholars Program Awil received a certificate in patient care experience and pre-licensed clinical care from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
It is evident that Awil uses ΕΑΣ's cardinal principle of intelligence in her everyday life through her academic excellence. Despite being involved in various clubs both off and on campus, she has managed to frequent the university's Deans List several times throughout her undergraduate career. This Spring, Awil will be graduating with a bachelors of science in Biology. Following graduation, she hopes to attend medical school to obtain a doctorate of medicine with a focus in pediatrics. Our sisters are very excited to have Dr. Awil treat our children one day and remain honored to call her a sister and confidant!
